Rain gutter buying tips
Anyone who can afford about $20,000 for a seamless gutter machine can start a gutter business, so be sure to check references and get more than one bid. If you're considering seamless gutters and one bid is considerably lower than another, check the gauge and other details.

Coil stock is sold in several thicknesses, including .032, .027, and .025 inch. Be sure to specify the thicker .032 material. Also ask whether the material is primary or secondary aluminum. Primary aluminum is more likely to be of a consistent quality.

Be sure your contractor will hang gutters along a chalk line, snapped to allow the proper slope of 1/4 inch for each 10 feet toward a downspout. That way, your new gutters will flow properly, look good and add to the value of your house.

Answers:

How do I wash my gutters?

We recommend first using ordinary non-abrasive household detergents diluted as one-third cup per gallon of water. Aply with a rag or sponge or soft bristle brush with a gentle rubbing action. In some cases where mildew (black spots on the surface) may be a problem, use the recipe as follows:

1/3 cup detergent (example tide) 1 quart Clorox

2/3 cup soilax 3 quarts water

Caution should be taken when handling this to avoid skin contact and to mix only in concentration stated above. This is a very strong mixture, and the gutters should be rinsed very well after application, because bleach is highly corrosive when in prolonged contact with aluminum. Caution should be shown not to spill this solution on any bushes, it will kill plants.

Your gutters may need to be cleaned. If your gutters are clogged, you may also consider installing leaf protection.

What are common rain gutter sizes and profiles?

Gutters are formed in several profiles and sizes. The standard profiles are a simple "U" shape and a "K" style, which has a ogee-shaped front, vaguely reminiscent of the letter "K."

Channels are 4, 5 or 6 inches in diameter; 5-inch K-style gutters are a popular type. Matching downspouts are 2 by 3-inch or 3 by 4-inch rectangular profiles or 3 or 4-inch round (often corrugated) pipes.

The larger systems are generally worth the difference in price because they're less likely to clog. If trees overhang your house, 3 by 4-inch downspouts are a good idea.

What different gutter mounting systems are available?

Gutters are attached along a house's eaves by any of several types of straps, brackets and hangers, as shown in the illustration at right.

A crossbar hanger is particularly sturdy. It clips on front, goes over top of the gutter and clips on the bracket at the back. More about gutter hangers.

Dan Sommers of Mr. Penny Gutters in Pasadena, California, says, "We primarily use the hidden hanger method because, over the years, as the wood gets a little older, spikes [of a spike-and-ferrule hanger] tend to pull out. We screw a hanger to the fascia or rafter tail. When we don't have that alternative because there are no rafters or no fascia to attach to, we have to use a strap. If we can't get the strap under the shingles, we encourage the homeowner to wait and install gutters in conjunction with a new roof."

How can you tell if you are having gutter problems?

The host of problems that a gutter system can have stem from gutters that are damaged, sagging, missing parts or improperly installed, it is unfortunate but likely exterior damage to your home is sure to follow.
Wet, Saturated Ground

A gutter system that is missing parts, or that drains too close to the house often will saturate the ground. This wet saturated ground can produce a variety of problems:

* Creates a breeding ground for Mold and Mildew.
* It will eat away at foundations and basement walls.
* Leaks and cracks will develop and will worsen quickly in the winter months when the ground freezes and expands.
* Driveways and walkways will sink and rise, interior and exterior walls and floors can warp, bow or become wet, molded or stained. Unfortunately, entire homes have been destroyed due to water damage.

Water Overflow and Clogged Gutters

Damage to exterior and interior (via the cavity) walls can occur and damp can result. The gutter should be checked for debris and blockages and the fascia brackets also checked as they may have been damaged, causing the gutter to sag.
Water Running Down Your House

This can be very annoying, both to walk under and because of the noise it can create. If this is happening, you should consider Gutter Guards. Protection for your gutters will keep leaves, pine needles, acorns and other debris out, and maintain the clear flow of water to the downspout.

If joints are leaking, the rubber seals inside the joint will probably need replacing, or sometimes the joint itself should be renewed. You will find this job a lot easier if attempted in hot weather, as the plastic is much more pliable.
